Dietary Considerations

Fiber Rich Diet:

  • A high fiber diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains (or fiber supplements) can prevent constipation and thus also  hemorrhoids to develop. Fiber adds bulk and moisture to the stool, and it speeds movement through the intestinal tract.

  • Fiber rich diet is also helpful in controlling weight since it is making you fell full sooner. It is also recommended for prevention of diabetes, diverticulosis and heart diseases (consult with your doctor or registered dietitian about recommendations for these conditions).

  • Foods rich in fiber are whole grains breads and cereals, beans, brown rice and other grains, nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables fresh or lightly cooked. Cost effective are flax seeds rich also in Omega 3 and easy to add to your daily food.

  • Be sure to increase your dietary fiber slowly. Sudden increase in fiber may cause diarrhea, bloating, intestinal gas, or other discomfort.

If you aim to eat a high-fibre diet and drink plenty of water (between six and ten glasses a day), you should be able to keep your feces soft, which will help you pass them without straining. Sometimes your doctor or dietitian will recommend a fibre supplement to help you.
