Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus, and not a worm related disease.  Ringworm can affect skin on your body (tinea corporis), scalp (tinea capitis), groin area (tinea cruris, also called jock itch), or feet (tinea pedis, also called athlete's foot), and collectively placed in a category called Tinea.. Often, there are several patches of ringworm on your skin at once. The disease is more annoying than dangerous. Hygiene plays an important role in both curing and preventing Ringworm.

Symptoms of Ringworm

Ringworm looks like its name. It forms a red, elevated, rapidly growing, ringlike sore on the skin. The center of the ring may be clear. The sore itself may contain scales, crust, or fluid-filled areas. Itching and pain may accompany the sore (doctors call them lesions). Each lesion is less than 5 cm across (about 2 inches) and occurs alone or in groups of 3-4.  Lesions commonly are found on the trunk, legs, arms, neck, and face (tinea faciei).  This type of ringworm does not involve the bearded area, scalp, groin (jock itch), hands, or feet (athlete's foot).

Causes of Ringworm

Ringworm is a highly contagious disease. Contaminated objects like gym mats, combs, unwashed clothing, and shower or pool surfaces, brushes, etc, can spread the infection.  Direct contact with infected people, animals, or inanimate objects transmits the fungal infection. Most ringworm infections result from human dermatophytes. You can develop ringworm through exposure to animals (commonly the household cat) and from the soil.

Raw vegetable juices, especially carrot juice in combination with spinach juice, have proved beneficial in the treatment of ringworm. The formula proportions considered helpful in this combination are 300 ml of carrot juice and 200 ml of spinach juice to make 500 ml or half a liter of juice.

Dietary Considerations

• Avoid sugar-containing foods, such as candy, pop, and pastries. This feeds the worms and slows the immune system.

• Raw carrots can help to expel worms. Consume 4 or more daily servings of grated carrots.

Other effective Remedies for Ringworm

A warm-water enema may be administered to cleanse the bowels during the all-fruit diet. The patient should get as much fresh air as possible. He should drink plenty of water and bathe twice daily. The skin, with the exception of the part affected with ringworm, should be vigorously rubbed with the palms of the hands before taking a bath.

Coconut oil may be applied to the parts with ringworm spots. It will help the skin to stay soft. Sunbathing is also beneficial and should be resorted to early in the morning, at the first light of dawn. A light mudpack applied over the areas of the ringworm is also helpful. The pack should be applied for half an hour, twice daily.
