Combine crushed strawberries, rosemary and vinegar to make an aromatic treatment for hair that strips away styling-product buildup. Hairstylist Amby Longhofer shows how to manage your hair during the unmanageable winter months. She also provides recipes for homemade treatments designed to strip product buildup, help control static and combat "hat head." Styling products can build up on hair over time. To strip the products from the hair shaft, try this all-natural recipe: Ingredients: 1 cup crushed strawberries 1/2 cup crushed rosemary 1 Tbs. vinegar Combine the ingredients, then apply to hair. Cover with plastic wrap and heat with a blow dryer or sit in the sun. Leave in for 20 minutes, rinse and wash. This acidic clarifier will not affect color-treated hair or stain lighter hair. Conditioners come in weights that are appropriate for each of the various hair types or seasons. Light finishers or detanglers seal are designed to seal in moisture and have no buildup. They are good for those with fine hair or for use in the summer. Medium-weight conditioners help hold in water. Be sure to look for a product that is silicone-based. Intensive moisturizers are good for processed or textured hair because they penetrate the hair shaft for deep conditioning and leave it soft. To condition and moisturize dry, brittle hair, mash an avocado and apply to damp, clean hair. Leave on about 20 minutes, wrapping hair in plastic wrap and heating with blow dryer. Rinse and wash. Jojoba oil is a natural lubricant and clarifier. It is water soluble, rather than oily. To combat hat head, make a mixture of water and leave-on conditioner and put in spray bottle. Spray hair lightly and work it in well. For highly textured hair, use a silicone-based styling cream to combat static and flyaway hair. Mix two tablespoons fabric softener with one tablespoon water to use as a finishing rinse. It will combat static and flyaway hair.
