With inflamed tissue, such as conjunctivitis, always use cool or tepid water temperatures to encourage a decrease in the swelling. Fill an eye wash cup, or a shot glass, with the salt water solution. Bend over onto the eye cup and fit as snugly as you can over the eye area, trying to prevent any leakage. Tilt head backwards, and blink several times, washing the eyeball and lid with liquid. Tilt head back to the forward and down position and empty eye cup contents into sink. Refill, and wash several times. Pat eye area gently. wash eye cup well with soap and water, as well as your hands. Do not re-use towels, as this can spread to other members of the family, or to the other eye. Follow with compress. Cucumber contains at least two compounds that are antidemic, or that reduce swelling -- ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid.
