How To Use Essential Oils To Relieve Itching & Promote Healing For Insect Bites

Lavender essential oil can be applied directly to the bite (or sting) by applying one drop “neat,” which means undiluted. Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils are the only essential oils that can be safely be used this way; all others must be diluted. Alternatively, a cotton swab can be moistened with fresh lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, or witch hazel and one or two drops of essential oil applied to it and dabbed onto the skin.

Essential oils that help relieve the pain, itch, and swelling of bites and stings are basil, bergamot, chamomile, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, patchouli, pine, and tea tree.

A paste made from baking soda, meat tenderizer, or clay powder can be used as well to relieve the discomfort of a bite or sting. To this paste you can add one to two drops of the listed essential oils helpful for these conditions. Poultices made from one of the following herbs (calendula, garlic, onion, plantain, marshmallow root, and St. John’s Wort) have been used in traditional herbal medicine for external application. Rubbing an ice cube over the area that has been stung is also helpful in relieving immediate swelling and pain.

In Medieval times, evil spirits ere blamed for illness. Perhaps garlic's reputation for warding off vampires and evil eye springs from its ability to rid people of various ailments.

Wise Tips

The addition of honey to herbal infusions that have diuretic qualities lessens this effect considerably. For instance, chamomile tea is often drunk before going to bed to promote a deep, restful sleep. However, as chamomile is a diuretic, this can be counterproductive if it makes you wake up to urinate. Simple adding a heaped teaspoon of organic honey to your night-time cup of chamomile tea will allow you to sleep the night through comfortably.
