Lavender Oil for Bug Bites Print E-mail

Lavender oil is an excellent remedy for mosquito bites or bee stings, and if you make some now, it'll be good for the next six months, taking you through spring and summer bites and stings. Cover two cups of finely chopped lavender flowers with olive oil or vegetable oil. Heat this gently but do not let it come to a boil. When it's heated through and fragrant, remove from the heat, let it steep for 15 minutes, then strain the mixture and store it in a sealed dark bottle.

Dab a little of this oil on your bite or sting to promote quick healing and to take away the swelling and itching.

Herbal Lore

The name "salvia"comes from the Latin root word for salvation. Sage earned this name because it was considered so powerful a remedy that if could save people from illness and even death. The Romans called sage, "herba sacra" or sacred herb.

Wise Tips

Choose only the best leaves and flowers for drying, and discard any that are going brown, or have been damaged by insects. Snip off the leaves and flowers carefully with scissors to avoid damaging the plant. Gather your herbs on a day without rain so the leaves and flowers dry quickly and are less likely to go mouldy.
