SENSORY RECALL
The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen both your ability to observe the natural world, and to maintain a vivid inner focus. Both of these skills are important, both in effective spellcasting, and in nurturing a strong ability to do trance work. Find a focus object for this work-any roughly palm sized, durable natural object of pleasing appearance and texture: a rock, a shell, a small piece of wood, etc. Sit quietly where you will not be disturbed, and simply observe it. Notice its visual appearance, its smell, its texture in your hand or against your face, and even against your tongue.
Now put the object aside. Close your eyes. With your inner senses, recapture the sense of your object. Recreate it in as many senses as you possibly can.
If you find your inner senses growing blurry or indistinct, pick up your object again, and reestablish it in your ordinary senses. Take your time; observe it as deeply as possible. When you are ready, resume your imaginary recreation of the object.
Alternate between sensory rehearsal and imaginary recreation of your focus object until you are able to maintain a vivid imaginary impression of the object, in all senses, for several minutes. This will probably take several weeks of daily practice, about 5 to 10 minutes at a session.
