Can a Plant Keep me Healthy?

Of course plants can keep you healthy-healthy and active, whether your feeling out of sorts or not. It might seem like double dutch initially, but the more you know about using plants the more you will know what will work for you.  All manner of plants, especially herbs, have been used to promote health and well-being for centuries, thorough out the world.

Before the rise of allopathic medicine, commonly known as orthodox medicine, herbal remedies played a major role in health care.  Whereas herbal medicine uses the natural healing qualities of the whole plant, allopathic medicine relies on the active ingredients of the plants isolated in laboratories; these are then sometimes combined with inorganic and synthetic ingredients. This new direction in health care turned its back on traditional holistic approach of herbal wisdom, which used the whole plant to treat the whole person, rather than a few active ingredients being used to alleviate or suppress the symptoms of a disease.  As a result of the increasing dominance of the new allopatic medicine much of the ancient wisdom of herbal medicine was lost. However, in the past few decades there has been a renewed interest in once again using the power of plants to maintain health and treat disease. This is at least partly because the limitations and side effects of allopathic medicine have become all too obvious, but pf people believe in the efficacy of the traditional herbal holistic approach.  Many of these people have a desire too, to take some active responsibility for their own heath and well-being, without always having to depend on their doctor to treat minor ailments.

Herbal Lore

The name "salvia"comes from the Latin root word for salvation. Sage earned this name because it was considered so powerful a remedy that if could save people from illness and even death. The Romans called sage, "herba sacra" or sacred herb.

Wise Tips

Choose only the best leaves and flowers for drying, and discard any that are going brown, or have been damaged by insects. Snip off the leaves and flowers carefully with scissors to avoid damaging the plant. Gather your herbs on a day without rain so the leaves and flowers dry quickly and are less likely to go mouldy.
