Home Medications and Treatments for Sore Throat A sore throat can occur with or without a cold. The throat is often red and swollen. The lymph glands in the neck can be easily felt and are tender. Like a cold, a sore throat can bring about symptoms of fever, tiredness, nausea, and headache. Sore throats are often viral in nature. Bacteria can also cause a sore throat, as can smoking, breathing polluted air, drinking alcohol, and hay fever and other allergies.
