Home Medications and Treatments for Tonsillitis

The tonsils are lumps of tissue located on either side of the back of your throat. They function as part of the immune system to help fight germs that try to enter your body through your mouth. Today, tonsils are recognized for their role in filtering harmful bacteria and viruses that could cause more serious infections. When tonsillitis strikes, the first line of treatment is typically self-care or antibiotics. Surgery is seldom necessary, unless tonsillitis recurs often or it interferes with breathing or swallowing.

Children and the older adults should be taken to the doctor if they have not managed to drink anything for 15 hours.

Avoid foods that weaken the immune system:

  • Refined and processed foods.
  • Dairy and high fat products.
  • Sugar and high sugar products.
  • Alcohol.

Daily dry friction and a hipbath, as well as breathing and other exercises, should all form part of the daily health regimen. The bowels should be cleansed daily with a warm-water enema during the period of fasting. A cold pack should be applied to the throat at two-hourly intervals during the day. A hot Epsom salts bath taken everyday or every other day will also be beneficial.

Herbal Lore

In Medieval times, evil spirits ere blamed for illness. Perhaps garlic's reputation for warding off vampires and evil eye springs from its ability to rid people of various ailments.

Wise Tips

The addition of honey to herbal infusions that have diuretic qualities lessens this effect considerably. For instance, chamomile tea is often drunk before going to bed to promote a deep, restful sleep. However, as chamomile is a diuretic, this can be counterproductive if it makes you wake up to urinate. Simple adding a heaped teaspoon of organic honey to your night-time cup of chamomile tea will allow you to sleep the night through comfortably.
